Morphological terms used in these web pages follow those in the Manual of Nearctic Diptera (McAlpine 1981). These terms are labelled on illustrations of a tachinid wing and body in the web page entitled Tachinid Morphology appearing elsewhere on this web site (for convenience, this Tachinid Morphology link appears in the menu bar used throughout the "Tachinids of Bertha Armyworm" web pages). Digital images of tachinid specimens were prepared using a Lumina® digital camera and Adobe Photoshop® software.
"Typical length" is cited for species to give an indication of their usual size; absolute size is not always very helpful because both large and very small individuals are sometimes encountered, the latter often the result of overcrowding in the host.
Tachinid specimens reared from bertha armyworm were borrowed from the following institutions:
SRCS - Saskatoon Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, 107
Science Crescent, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7N 0X2; P.G. Mason.
No tachinids reared from bertha armyworm were found in the Canadian National Collection of Insects (CNC) in Ottawa. Except for the aforementioned reared material, this paper is based on non-reared tachinid specimens housed in the CNC.
